Why was the cliff palace built?

The Ancestral Puebloans built the cliff palaces in Mesa Verde, Colorado, for protection and shelter. The cliffs provided a natural defense against enemies and the elements. The palaces were built in alcoves in the cliffs, which helped to keep them warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The Ancestral Puebloans also built the cliff palaces to be close to water sources and other resources.
