The dome of a Van De Graaf generator is usually made of metal because metal is a good conductor of electricity. The purpose of the dome is to store electric charge, and metal is able to do this effectively. Wood, on the other hand, is a poor conductor of electricity and would not be able to store electric charge as well as metal. Therefore, it is not possible for the dome of a Van De Graaff generator to be made of a wooden sphere.
