A small group of Babylonian Jews remained in Babylon after the Persian conquest, and they later played an important role in the development of Jewish culture and religion during the Second Temple period. The Babylonian Talmud, one of the most important texts of Jewish law, was compiled in Babylon during this time.
In the 7th century AD, Babylon was conquered by the Arab Muslims, and it became part of the Islamic world. The city continued to decline, and by the 10th century, it was largely abandoned. Today, the ruins of Babylon lie near the city of Hillah in modern-day Iraq.
