How did ti get discovered?

The discovery of titanium is often credited to the British mineralogist William Gregor in 1791, who found it in the mineral ilmenite. However, the pure metal was not isolated until 1910 by the American chemist Matthew A. Hunter.

Gregor was studying a black magnetic sand from Cornwall, England, when he noticed that it contained an unknown metal. He named the metal "menaccanite" after the Cornish parish where it was found, but later changed the name to "titanium" after the Titans of Greek mythology.

In 1910, Hunter was able to isolate pure titanium by heating titanium tetrachloride with sodium in a steel bomb. The resulting metal was hard and brittle, but it was not until the development of new production methods in the 1940s that titanium became commercially viable.

Today, titanium is used in a variety of applications, including aircraft, spacecraft, medical implants, and jewelry. It is a lightweight, strong, and corrosion-resistant metal, making it ideal for these purposes.
