Purchase the raw material you will need for your sculpture. Use clay if you want to be able to add material to the sculpture during the sculpting process. Sculpting wood or stone only allows for the removal of material. Get the tools that correspond with the material you choose. Ensure that the material will be sufficient to accommodate the full dimensions of your sculpture.
Visualize how your sculpture will look by examining the raw material. Rough out the basic outline of your sculpture with a cutting tool. Explore the effectiveness of different tools to accomplish this. Be very careful when removing material if using wood or stone. Keep the proportions of the sculpture as you work. Take measurements and mark points in your sculpture as you work to help you keep perspective.
Add detail to your sculpture once you are satisfied with the rough form. Keep a balanced approach by detailing all sides in similar increments. Avoid focusing on only one area and keep pausing to observe your progress from all sides. Use a picture or a model to help you refine your detail. Keep in mind that the right tools will make your job much easier.
Texture and finish the surface of your sculpture. Use a wet sponge to create a smooth surface on clay and a knife or textured object to imprint or refine the surface texture of your sculpture. Use a sander going from rough to fine grit to create smooth surfaces on stone and wood.
Cure your sculpture to complete it. Fire the clay to the proper curing temperature. Choose the right glazes or stains to get the look you want unless you like the natural look of the clay. Use a sealant to protect your sculpture from moisture, especially if displayed outdoors.
