How to Build Moon Sculptures

Building a moon sculpture can be helpful for a science project, as a work of fine art or as a craft project for a rainy afternoon. The cratered, uneven and jagged surface of the moon defines its characteristics. To properly capture the effect, you need a material that is conducive to this form. These materials include a foam ball and a fork, along with paint which enriches the lunar feeling and creates the glowing effect.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the foam ball on a table.

    • 2

Remove chunks of the foam from the even surface using the fork, creating jagged "craters." Create several large ones and some small ones.

    • 3

Mix yellow and white paint with a small dab of brown to get a light yellow color for the base color of the moon.

    • 4

Paint the entire moon using the paintbrush.

    • 5

      Allow the moon to dry.

    • 6

Mix another dab of brown paint with the remaining paint color of the moon, making it slightly darker.

    • 7

Paint each of the center of the craters with the slightly darker moon color. Paint only the interior of the crater, not the surface of the moon.

    • 8

      Allow the moon to dry.
