Construct an armature to use as a guide. Shape bendable iron wire into a rough male figure shape. Wrap the wire with aluminum foil to fill it out. The entire armature will be shaped like a male figure without details. It will be the basis upon which you apply the clay.
Break clay off in chunks and press it to your armature. Use your thumbs and fingers to press and shape the clay as you apply it in layers. Build the clay up gradually, keeping it as even as possible, finding the edges and lines of your armature to create a rough male figure with the clay as you did with the wire and foil.
Use your tools to fashion the details of your male figure. Remove bits of clay with your cutter to bring out the hard lines and shapes that will define your sculpture as a male, then use a scraping tool to level the lines. Follow the scraper with a curving tool, which is how you will blend the clay. Continue to alternate between the tools, working on small areas at a time until you've defined your figure.
Bake your sculpture in an oven set at about 300 degrees. Depending upon the size of your sculpture, you can bake your sculpture in your home oven. If you've done a large sculpture, try renting a larger oven or kiln at a ceramic shop. Follow the manufacturer's instruction for time versus density.
Use water and a fine grain sanding sponge to wet sand your sculpture. Rub the sanding sponge--found at hardware stores--gently over your sculpture in small areas at a time. This will bring out a nice polished look in your finished sculpture.
