What was khilafat movement?

The Khilafat Movement was a pan-Indian Muslim civil disobedience movement led by Indian Muslims primarily to safeguard the religious and political interests of the Caliph of the Ottoman Empire — the political and spiritual leader of the largest Muslim political entity before and the last Sunni caliph (successor of the Islamic prophet Muhammad), Abdülmecid II, against the territorial encroachment of British, French, and Italian colonial powers during World War I. Atatürk abolished the Caliphate on 3 March 1924
