What is the Grammy statue?

The Grammy

* The Grammy Award trophy, commonly known as the Grammy, is the award presented by The Recording Academy to recognize "Outstanding Achievement in the Music Industry". Originally called the Gramophone Award, it has been presented to musicians since 1958.

* The trophy depicts a gilded gramophone, the early sound-reproducing device, on a marble base.

* The Grammy is an electroformed and gold-plated statue. The statue is seven and a half inches (19 cm) tall and weighs between four and five pounds (1.8-2.3 kg).

* The Recording Academy presents several Grammys each year in various categories, including Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist.

*The Gramophone Company (now part of Universal Music Group) presented their first Gramophone Awards on 02 May 1977, just four months after the first "Gold Record" award and nearly twenty-five years before the formation of the Academy of Recorded Arts & Sciences and its Grammy Awards.
