How to Make a Sunset Out of Typography

Making pictures with typography is an art form known as ASCII art. ASCII stands for the American Standard Code for Information Interchange, which is an index of 128 standard characters used on a keyboard. ASCII artists use those 128 different characters to form pictures of various objects and events, such as a sunset. Making realistic representations with those 128 characters is easier than many people think, though it helps to be familiar with all 128 characters.

Instructions

    • 1

Open a text editing application and create a new document. Notepad, for example, is a good text editing application that comes with every Windows installation.

    • 2

Create 21 spaces on the first line, followed by the "|" character.

    • 3

Create 17 spaces on the second line, followed by the "\" character. This is then followed by seven more spaces, and the "/" character. Twelve more spaces follow, and then this string of characters: "_\/_".

    • 4

Create 19 spaces in the third line, followed by this string of characters: ".-'-.". This is followed by 14 spaces, and then this string of characters: "//o\ _\/_".

    • 5

Create 14 spaces on the fourth line, followed by this string of characters: "-- / \ --". This is followed by 11 spaces, and then this string of characters: "| /o\\".

    • 6

Create this string of characters on the fifth line: "^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^-=======-~^~^~^~~^~^~^~|~~^~^|^~`".

    • 7

Create 46 spaces on the sixth line, followed by this character: "|".

    • 8

Examine the picture, and make sure that you did not miss any spaces anywhere and that everything is in proper alignment. The picture should be of a sun setting on the horizon, with two coconut trees set off to the side.
