What is pop rocks?

Pop Rocks are a type of candy that is known for its popping sensation when it is eaten. The candy is made of sugar, corn syrup, baking soda, and small amounts of other ingredients, such as artificial flavors and colors. When Pop Rocks are eaten, the baking soda reacts with the saliva in the mouth to produce carbon dioxide gas. This gas causes the candy to foam and pop, creating the characteristic popping sensation.

Pop Rocks were originally invented in the 1950s by a chemist named William Mitchell. Mitchell was working on a way to create a candy that would change color when it was eaten. He accidentally created Pop Rocks when he added baking soda to a mixture of sugar and corn syrup. The candy was initially marketed as "Space Dust" but was later renamed to Pop Rocks.

Pop Rocks became popular in the 1970s and 1980s. They were often sold in small, individual packages and were a popular treat for children and adults alike. Pop Rocks were also used in a number of commercials and other promotional materials, which helped to increase their popularity.

In recent years, Pop Rocks have continued to be a popular candy, although they have not reached the same level of popularity that they enjoyed in the 1970s and 1980s. The candy is still available in most stores and is often used in party favors and other special events.
