When did chalk pastels become popular?

The first chalk pastels date to the 15th century, when they were used by artists to create sketches and underdrawings. They became popular in the 18th century as a medium for finished artwork, and were widely used by artists such as Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin, Jean-Antoine Watteau and Edgar Degas.
