How to Get Discovered for Your Talent

Whether you have a talent for acting, singing, or juggling bowling pins, you probably want to be able to showcase your skills to the public. That's what getting discovered is all about. Although many people believe that getting discovered is about luck, it's also about preparation and timing. Fortunately for you, there are steps you can take to get yourself close to the limelight.

Instructions

    • 1

Look within your community for opportunities to display your talent. Before you begin to think about the national stage, you'll want the support of those who are in your area. Some ideas include performing at local schools, coffee shops, and birthday parties. You can also join a community group, such as a theatre, chorus or orchestra. The more people you impress, the more your name will begin to circulate.

    • 2

Treat your road to discovery as a job rather than a hobby if you want to get discovered. Set business hours for yourself during which you will pursue opportunities to show your skill. If you are reliant upon others for transportation, it's important to work when it's time to work. Don't waste their time. Otherwise, they might not take your talent and passion seriously.

    • 3

Gather information about scheduled events in the most populated areas near you. Weddings, expos, summer camps, and other ceremonies might be in need of talent. More importantly, these are likely to be paid gigs with a great amount of exposure.

    • 4

Study the industry you wish to enter closely and look out for the key players. You want to know where major talent management agencies are located, who you should contact for a preview/audition, and any current issues facing those who share your same talent. For example, if actors are being laid off in your town's theater circuit, you'll want to know why before you start auditioning.

    • 5

Polish your talents off by practicing as frequently as possible among people who are at least as skilled as you are. Although you might feel ready for the limelight, there is always room for improvement. Getting discovered is about preparation so you want to be ready when your big break arrives.

Submit yourself for local talent searches, showcases, and competitions where key industry players are likely to be present. By this time, you should have enough confidence and a solid performance background to stand out amongst many hopefuls.
