1. Gather your materials. You will need:
* A block of wood (around 4 x 4 x 8 inches)
* A saw
* A drill
* A hammer
* A chisel
* A file
* Sandpaper
* Wood stain or paint (optional)
2. Prepare the wood.
* Cut a cube or block of wood to be 4x4x4 inches.
* Sand the wood until it is smooth.
3. Draw the design.
* Sketch the ocarina shape onto the wood. This will be your guide when carving. Make sure the design includes a windway (the hole you blow into) and several finger holes (holes you cover to change the pitch).
4. Cut the wood.
* Use a saw to carefully cut out the ocarina body, as well as a separate "cap" for the windway. Take your time and make sure the cuts are clean.
5. Drill the holes.
* Use a drill to create the windway and finger holes. The windway should be about 1/4-inch in diameter and the finger holes should be about 1/8-inch in diameter.
6. Sand.
* Sand the ocarina again until it is smooth and free of any splinters.
7. Carve the windway.
* Use a chisel to carefully carve the windway. The windway should be 1/2 inch wide by about 1 inch long.
8. Assemble the ocarina.
* Glue the windway cap onto the ocarina body. Make sure the cap is in line with the windway and that there are no gaps.
* Apply wood stain or paint (optional).
* Let the ocarina dry completely.
Your very own ocarina is ready to play!
