Winter Art Projects for Children

Art is a pleasant form of self expression that kids can share with family and friends. Also, it comes in many forms, such as, sketching, sculpturing, or three dimensional art. No matter the medium used to create art projects, they are especially fun for children during the long winter months when outside play is less frequent.
  1. Memory Box

    • Children can make their own box of memories.

A memory box keeps items of value in one place as a reminder of special moments with family and friends. Children can add their favorite pictures from a birthday party or vacation trip. In addition, special jewelry for girls and baseball cards, letters, or special toys for boy go inside. To make a memory box you will need a wooden or cigar box, paste or permanent glue, glitter, sequins, craft paper, scissors, paint brushes and paint. The box receives a coat of paint in one or more of the child's favorite color(s).

After the paint dries, children decide which items to glue to the outside of the box, such as glitter, sequins, buttons, tiny sea shells or pictures. Afterward, children may place trinkets, greeting cards and other mementos in the memory box.

    Collage

    • Children expand their minds with collage art.

A collage provides fun for children when they make an arrangement of pictures on thick art paper or poster board. Larger paper sizes, such as 8-by-14 inches, maximize the fun. Paste, scissors, paint brushes and magazines are also needed. Children use these items to cut out pictures, such as families dressed in winter clothing, snow scenes, snowmen or snowflakes. Let them arrange pictures onto the poster board in artful arrangements, then secure them with glue. Lettering from magazines and newspapers form headings to give the collage meaning and bring it to life.

    Decoupage

    • Decoupage is fun during the winter.

To decoupage, kids need paint brushes, magazines, newspapers, pictures, scissors, glue and varnish. Traditionally, wooden boxes provided the structure for decoupage. However, glass bottles, cigar boxes and tin boxes can also become the forms for decoupage projects. Children can also learn to decoupage tables, place mats and other surfaces for winter fun.

    Mixed Art Mediums

    • Art that awakens a child's mind.

Let children try something different by mixing mediums. Usually, when children draw, either paint, crayons, or another medium goes into the picture. With mixed mediums, the child draws a picture adding paints, colored pencils and crayons all in the same picture. Also, such items as ribbons, glitter, buttons, or fabric are added. For instance, a girl might draw a picture of herself wearing a coat and add buttons.
