Think about how the public should view the company. Put a lot of thought into what attitude the business carries and how best to express that visually. Investigate the logos of the competition. This generates ideas of the general look and feel of logo design in the particular industry.
Grab a pencil and paper and make some rough sketches. Brainstorm simple sketches of possible ideas for the logo. Do not skip over this process. It adds valuable insight into which concepts are visually appealing and which ones are not. Keep it simple. Cluttered logos are difficult to read and confuse the brain. Generally, around 10 to 20 rough ideas reveal a design that encompasses the right look and feel for the brand of the business.
Make the sketch digital. Use vector software to design the logo. If changes are necessary, a vector is quickly and easily adjusted. These types of graphics can be utilized at any size; from icons to billboards, without losing resolution. Choose the best ideas from the sketches and create the logos in a vector program. Design them first in black and white. This ensures the design contrast works well with or without color. Good logos are just as memorable in black and white as they are in full color. They will maintain the same consistency whether they are very small or very large.
Choose the color scheme. Color is a very important aspect of the design process. Different industries are associated with different colors. Colors also represent different values in different countries. In America, red is often associated with power and energy. Green gives an expression of freshness and growth. Blue represents stability. Research the different colors and how they might subconsciously effect potential buyers and how they fit into the industry overall.
Test the completed logo. See how it looks at very large sizes and very small sizes. Make sure the font chosen is easily discernible even at the smallest sizes. Use kerning to adjust type that tends to close up at smaller sizes. Watch to be sure all aspects of the logo maintain proportion at all sizes.
Save the digital logo in an .eps format. This keeps it in a vector format and allows it to be easily adjusted, re-sized and available for use on projects of all types, from promotional materials to packaging.
