Paper Mache Art Ideas

Two methods are used to create paper mache crafts. One method uses paper pulp, paper soaked in water until soft and mealy, for molding around a frame to create the desired object. The other method uses newspaper strips or squares of paper soaked in a solution of glue and water; the squares or strips are applied to an object or frame to create the desired effect. The two methods may be combined to create detail.
  1. Make a Globe

    • Making a paper mache globe requires very little in terms of supplies. You will need a balloon, strips of newspaper soaked in a solution of water and glue, tempura paints, and outlines of the seven continents. Inflate the balloon. Wrap the prepared newspaper strips around the balloon allowing them to dry slightly between applications until the "crust" is about a half inch to an inch thick. Allow the globe to dry completely. Stencil the outlines of the continents onto the globe. Paint the globe with the tempura colors and allow to dry. Apply a varnish to your paper mache globe to protect its surface.

    Create a Piñata

    • A piñata can take almost any form that you desire as long as you're able to create a viable frame. Balloons, wire hangers, sticks, and other objects may be cobbled together to make a frame with some creativity and a bit of masking tape. You'll want to use a balloon or some other method to make sure a hollow space is created for you to fill with candy and toys. After shaping your frame, wrap newspaper strips soaked in a water and glue solution around the frame. You'll want to make sure that your piñata has four to six layers and is sturdy but then enough to break when struck during fun and games. Once your piñata is dry, cut a square flap on the surface where the hollow space rests. Decorate your piñata in way that camouflages the opening but leaves it accessible.

    Make a Bowl

    • Select a bowl nearest the size you want your final bowl to be. Wrap the bowl in plastic wrap. Turn the bowl upside down. Squeezing the excess liquid from your prepared paper pulp mold it to the shape of the bowl. Repeat this action until the entire bowl is cover. Allow the first layer of paper pulp to dry before applying another. Continue this series of actions until the bowl reaches the desired thickness and allow to dry completely. Turn the bowl right-side up; separate it from the framing bowl; and remove the plastic wrap. Paint and varnish your bowl.

    Free Form

    • Paper Mache is a versatile craft. Use your imagination. Paper mache pulp can take on a range of densities and textures. Use paper pulp, scraps, strips and squares to make a paper sculpture following the same layer process as described in the previous projects. Once you complete your sculpture, paint and decorate it. Remember to seal it with a varnish.
