Crayon Art Activities

While young children may not have the skills necessary to work with more advanced art materials such as glazes and acrylic paints, they are not incapable of interpreting various forms of art. Using crayons as their main art tool, children can create their own impression of many popular works of art.
  1. Crayon Etching

    • While the art form of etching is traditionally completed by carving designs into metal or wood, children can create an etched work of their own using crayons and paper. Children create the etched designs when they scratch over layers of crayon, the bottom a thick variation of colors, the top a thick layer of black, with an object such as a toothpick. The colorful crayon underneath the layer of black is revealed only where the student makes the design.

    Crayon Resist

    • Resist artwork is the creation of two mediums, such as an oil pastel and watercolor paint layered on top of each other. Children can create their own resist piece using crayons and watercolor paints. A design is chosen and thickly colored onto a piece of paper with the crayons. The child then covers the picture with a layer of watercolor paint, allowing the waxy surface of the crayon to show through. Children can experiment with the thickness of crayon and amount of paint used for different finished effects with their art activity.

    Crayon Antiquing

    • Antiquing is the process of making various works of art look aged using a variety of mediums. Children can change their own work of art to one that looks aged with a crayon antiquing art activity. To begin the process, children simply cover a thick, preferably brown, piece of paper with their design, colored thickly with crayon. Then black paint is lightly brushed on, thinned out with water and polished away. The process is repeated until the crayon art has achieved the desired aged look. Crayola recommends using metallic crayons for a realistic antique look.

    Crayon Texture Rubbing Collage

    • Many children learn the art of texture rubbing with crayons at a young age, using a crayon without a wrapper; they place a textured object under their paper and rub until a picture appears. Collages are also a fun art activity for children, allowing them to combine various art and craft pieces to create a new piece of art. A crayon texture rubbing collage combines both activities, when children cut out their texture rubbings and combine them together on another sheet of paper to make a collage.

    Crayon Pop Art

    • A bright and colorful crayon art activity is the creation of Pop Art in the style of Andy Warhol. Children choose four main colors for their Pop Art piece and draw the portrait of themselves or someone else in each of the colored squares, making minor changes each time, such as a different facial expression or even choosing a different color of crayon for the outline of the portrait.
