Lily Tattoo Ideas

In Christianity, lilies symbolize peace and purity, while to the ancient Egyptians, this flower represented fertility. Lilies are beautiful flowers that can be wonderful subjects for tattoos, and if you are interested in a tattoo of a lily, there are many options open to you. Consider what you want your lily to say about you and how you want it depicted.
  1. Religious Tattoos

    • In medieval art, the angel Gabriel is often depicted holding a lily. If the significance of the lily is primarily related to Christianity for you, consider getting a white lily tattoo that utilizes a cross design. The lily may be combined with the cross, whether it is growing next to it or twined around the cross's arms and shaft.

    Memorial Tattoos

    • Lilies also have an association with death and the possibility of rebirth. If someone close to you has died, a memorial tattoo may have some lilies integrated into the design. You may choose to put lilies on the depiction of a coffin, or you may simply add the deceased's name or initials to a single lily flower.

    Art Nouveau

    • Art Nouveau was an art movement during the beginning of the twentieth century that celebrated elegant forms combined with organic lines and flat color. It treasured floral and natural motifs, and a lily tattoo designed in the Art Nouveau style is a wonderfully feminine image.

    Tribal Tattoos

    • Tribal tattoos make use of strong, slashing black lines to convey the shape of the image. A lily, with its sweep of petals and long stem, would be a perfect subject for a tribal tattoo. You may wish to create this tattoo yourself, or you may collaborate with a tattoo artist to get a design that is just perfect for you.

    Realistic Tattoos

    • While lilies are often white, they come in a variety of colors, including yellow, red and orange. If you find a very good tattooist, you can design a realistic lily tattoo. You may choose to have it done in gray tones, or you might choose have it inked in bright colors. While this does require a skilled artist, the results can be impressive.
