Greek Tattoo Ideas

Considered the birthplace of philosophy, teaching, mathematics and architecture, ancient Greece often seems mystical. Historically, ancient Grecians used tattoos as punishment but today they show a person's interest in the Greek language, history, art or mythology. Even if you're not from Greece, there are plenty of ways to express your personality with a Greek tattoo.
  1. Greek Words

    • The Grecian alphabet is much different from the Roman alphabet we use today, even though it heavily influenced the English language. Getting a tattoo of words or phrases in Greek is a way to keep the beautiful ancient language alive. Whether it’s a word like “life” or “love,” or a phrase from your favorite Grecian philosopher, a tattoo in Greek is an effective conversation starter.

    History of Greece

    • Greece is full of history. Images of gladiators, aqueducts, emperors and gods permeate our culture. A tattoo reflecting Grecian history, architecture or people shows your love of the country and its history, such as a portrait of Alexander the Great or a famous Greek landmark.

    Mythology

    • Nearly everyone is familiar with Greek mythological figures like Zeus, Aphrodite or Daphne. For example, getting a tattoo of Athena in her battle dress could show your love of wisdom and courage. You could simply have a god by himself or several in a scene together, each meaning something different to you.

    Grecian Cross

    • Crosses of all kinds are incredibly popular tattoos. Grecian tattoos are fairly uncommon and interesting because they have no relationship to the Christian cross as ancient Greece predates the Crucifixion. The Greek zodiac cross with a square in the middle can be marked with 12 squares, each with the corresponding zodiac symbol in it. Another Greek cross is short with arms of equal length, each representing a cardinal direction.
