How to Create a Kid's Art Portfolio

Art portfolios showcase an artist’s best pieces. Though all drawings might not make it into a professional artist's final portfolio, the development of a portfolio starts with all of her drawings, paintings and works of art. Though most children are not at the level of professional artists, many draw, paint, color, create art and have large collections of artwork. Creating an art portfolio for a child is a simple task.

Instructions

    • 1

Get a plain folder. The color is based on personal preferences or the preferred color of the child. A plain manila folder is often best when creating an art portfolio for a child. The size should be big enough to fit the majority of the child’s artwork. Since children’s art is typically done on normal 8 by 11 ½ inch paper, letter-size folders are usually appropriate. For artwork on larger paper, canvas or other objects, a larger folder or manila envelope might be needed instead.

    • 2

Place the child’s artwork in the folder. The artwork should be easy to pull out and should not be attached to the folder. A folder should not damage the artwork placed inside it. Instead, the folder acts to protect the artwork. A portfolio should include at least 10 pieces of art.

    • 3

Stencil or write bubble letters spelling the child’s name and indicating that this is his art portfolio. The size and shape of the letters are personal preference.

    • 4

Allow the child to draw on the front of the folder. A plain folder allows children to draw and color to decorate the outside of the portfolio. Crayons are usually the best coloring option for children. Older children might prefer colored pencils instead.
