How to Tune a Tattoo Power Supply

The basic principle of tattooing shows little change over the centuries. Needles are dipped in a pigment, then inserted underneath the skin and removed to leave behind a design. Modern tattooing has advanced the sterilization and speed aspects of this process but the underlying principle remains the same. The basic function of the power supply on a tattoo machine is to regulate the speed of the needle, determining how quickly the needle plunges into and pulls out of the skin.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the input voltage on the power supply. Many power supplies are internationally manufactured or used and allow the user to change between voltages. For U.S. use, make sure the machine is set on 110 volts.

    • 2

Select the correct voltage for your project. For outlining and line work, a setting of 6.5 to 7.5 volts is recommended. For shading work, set the voltage between 7.5 and 9.5.

    • 3

Check your clip cord and foot pedal connections and test the machine by pressing down the foot pedal. The machine's needle should move in and out smoothly, quickly and without interruption.
