What Is Coin Glass?

Coin glass uses impressions of coins in glass, the coins themselves or merely the shape of coins to create a wide variety of glassware that is often used in commemorative glass pieces. Many glass companies have manufactured coin glass, some more than 100 years ago.
  1. Early American Coin Glassware

    • Nineteenth century glassware that included coin impressions was made popular by the Central Glass Company in Wheeling, W.V. The company used mostly silver dollar and half dollar glass coins, molded using real coins, for borders on ribbed glassware. This was later considered counterfeiting by the U.S. Treasury Department and the practice was stopped.

    Embossed Coins

    • Fostoria Glass Company stamped or embossed coins on various pieces of glassware from 1957 to 1967. The embossed products sold for more than the original crystal pieces. According to the "Elegant Glass Book," by Debbie and Randy Coe, the original pieces are colored ruby, blue, emerald green, olive green, amber and crystal.

    Coin Dot

    • Fenton Art Glass is famous not only for its hand-painted glass but for its coin dot pattern. Fenton's coin dot glassware has stippled dots. Other glass companies manufacture a smooth coin dot pattern that is sometimes called a spot pattern or pearly dots.
