How to Make a Portable Black Light

Black light is ultraviolet light, or UV, some of which is in a range invisible to human eyes. A black light can be useful in a wide variety of ways. Using some easily obtained materials, a portable black light can be made. Whether to identify and treat ailments, to identify gems and fake currency, or just to illuminate eye-catching artwork, a portable black light can be very useful.

Things You'll Need

  • A compact fluorescent screw-in black-light bulb
  • 115-volt lamp with screw-in light socket, 6 inches tall
  • 12-volt motorcycle battery
  • 500-watt 12-volt-to-115-volt inverter
  • Open-top wooden toolbox with carrying handle

Instructions

    • 1

      Connect the positive and negative wires of a 500-watt inverter to the positive and negative posts of a motorcycle battery. This will be the power source for the black light.

      Set the motorcycle battery and the inverter into a wooden toolbox. The toolbox will be the portable carrier for the black light.

      Plug a 6-inch-tall 115-volt lamp into the inverter. You are connecting the black light's lighting source into the electrical source.

      Remove the lampshade from the 115-volt lamp. Then place the lamp into the open-top toolbox next to the battery and inverter.

      Screw the compact fluorescent black-light bulb into the socket on the 115-volt lamp. Then turn on the lamp. The black light is now finished and can be transported wherever needed by carrying it in the toolbox.
