List of the Steps in the Design Process

Throughout history, design has helped to define cultures, from the building of great cathedrals to representing shifts in cultural motifs. Indeed, design is not merely represented by what is aesthetically pleasing to the eye, but also by what is functional in nature. Consider the Roman arches that were necessary to support aqueducts. It is important for an artist to understand the design process no matter what medium is used. Whether your goal is to create a painting, sculpture or blueprints, there are some basic design elements involved in creating an design.
  1. Design Brainstorming

    • Conceptualize the type of design you want to create. For example, if you want to create a statue that represents the process by which people grow and learn from their mistakes or experiences, think about the types of imagery that can be used to help symbolize this idea. Make a list of some of the features you might want to include.

    Gather Materials

    • Gather the necessary materials for the type of project you intend to create, be it a 10-foot sculpture or a canvas painting. Make sure you have the needed materials for the project, which could include a canvas, paints, brushes, clay and photo-editing and graphics design software programs.

    Preliminary Sketches

    • One of the most important steps of creating a design, especially an intricate design, is developing a series of sketches to help you to actualize the design you have in your head. You may find that the ideas you had in your mind take an entirely different route than you initially planned. Many of the greatest artists, such as Da Vinci and Van Gogh, created numerous sketches before embarking on the actual final work.

    Complete the Design

    • Create your work using the sketches you developed to model the process of creating your design. Keep in mind that while the sketches can guide you, don't be afraid to deviate from them when you feel it will help you achieve a work that best expresses your artistic vision.
