How to Design Your Own Neck Tattoo

So you've decided to design your own neck tattoo. Good for you. Let's face it, unless you plan to wear a lot of scarves and turtlenecks, people will be spending a lot of time staring at your neck. A design picked at random out of a book is no good. Your tattoo should be very personal, saying something about who you are. Taking some time finding a good design now can save you a lot of regret later.

Instructions

    • 1

Take a close-up picture of the side of your neck that you want tattooed. Your shirt should be off, with your neck held at a natural angle, slightly extended.

    • 2

Print several full-page versions of the photograph. Color will be best, but black and white works too if the tattoo will only be one color.

    • 3

Decide what tattoo you want. This is a deeply personal decision. Is your passion music? Art? Do you prefer tribal designs or industrial ones? Are you getting a tattoo of a person's name or portrait? Will it be a religious tattoo? Remember, this is forever.

    • 4

Sketch several versions of the tattoo on the printed photos with a pencil. Play with different sizes, angles and levels of detail.

    • 5

Select your favorite few designs and do full color renderings in marker.

    • 6

Select your favorite design and get inked.
