Gold Line Inlay Technique

Gold has a credibility that no other metal has achieved. Universally seen as a standard for wealth, beauty, and decadence, it has been used in line inlay techniques since the dawn of civilization.
  1. History

    • The technique of using gold line inlays has its origins over 3,600 years ago. Bronze Age daggers from 1600 BCE have been recovered which depict detailed hunting scenes of such amazing detail that it is clear that the craft had been mastered perhaps centuries before. The technique has been used across history relatively unchanged with a resurgence of popularity around the time of the Renaissance period and has continued into the modern age.

    The Process

    • Gold line inlay is a technique that is almost as simple in concept as the name suggests. Lines are etched into the surface of the medium, filled with gold, and then smoothed down to be flush with the original item. Like many art forms, gold inlay is simple to accomplish, but requires considerable dedication to master.

    Uses of Gold Line Inlay

    • Gold line inlay has been used to adorn weaponry from daggers to modern firearms for almost as long as men have waged war. Beyond that, it has found its way into grand works of art, burial shrouds, jewelry, and even musical instruments. Even now, gold inlay technique adds a touch of class to both artistic and practical endeavors such as cosmetic dentistry.
