How to Make Scroll Art

Scroll art is an ancient Asian and Egyptian art form that uses a variety of papers and textiles to display a story either in hieroglyphic writing, calligraphy or drawings. This complex art form created by true professionals can contain up to six different types of paper and textiles and custom-made wooden rods. However, scroll art in American culture is often a simpler form of art where paper is used more often than textiles.

Instructions

    • 1

Tape together 20 pieces of 8 1/2-by-11 inch paper, turned horizontal, or cut 20 feet of paper from a paper roll to make a banner. Use a clear tape on both sides of the paper to connect the pieces.

    • 2

Create a story idea and determine if you would like to tell your story using drawings or another art form such as hieroglyphics. If you choose the later art form, be sure to search the Internet for the meanings of symbols so you are able to effectively translate your story.

    • 3

Draw your story on the paper using crayons, markers or paint. If you used paper sheets, do a new drawing on each page to having your story start on the first page and end on the 20th page. If you used a paper roll, do a new drawing approximately every foot.

    • 4

Paint two sticks that are approximately 11 to 12 inches long. Use black or gold paint.

    • 5

Attach one stick to the front side of the start of the first piece of paper and attach one stick to the front side of the end of the last piece of paper. Use a strong glue. Let dry.

    • 6

Roll the paper into a scroll starting with the first stick and ending at the last stick, or vice versa. You can also mount your scroll on a wall for decoration.
