How to Make Metal Block Printing

Metal or wood block printing predated movable type, and was the preferred method of printing books, newspapers and signs before the printing press was invented. Metal block printing is still popular as a decorative and artistic technique, although modern technology has replaced it as a viable printing technique for most uses. Like screen printing, metal block printing applies one color at a time, so most designs contain only one or two colors.

Instructions

    • 1

Arrange the metal blocks design side up in the block printing frame. Use blank blocks for any area not requiring designs.

    • 2

Apply a strip of ink or paint onto the sponge roller, and roll a thin film of ink onto the stamps. Be careful to apply the ink to only the raised designs of the stamps. This can be accomplished by not pressing down on the roller.

    • 3

Lay the paper face down on the inked blocks. Apply even pressure to the paper by placing a large wooden block or a book on top for approximately 30 seconds.

    • 4

Remove the weight and carefully peel back the paper to reveal the image. Allow to dry fully before handling or applying any other colors.
