How to Make a Writing Journal

Journals are perfect for expressing your thoughts without having to censor yourself to anyone. Writing can be a personal therapy session that allows you to recall events for years to come, talk about your insecurities and make plans for the future. With a few materials you probably have around the home, a do-it-yourself journal has never been easier.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a 3-ring binder that is either decorated to your liking or one that has a clear cover that you can personalize however you'd like. Most 3-ring binders are sized to hold 8.5-by-11-inch paper, but if you prefer a small size, that works just as well. Once you've chosen a binder, select a pack of multicolor loose-leaf paper that fits into the binder you bought.

Take a sheet of computer paper and create an index page for your journal. Your index page should contain different sections or topics for your journal that can correspond to either a page number or a paper color. For example, chapter 1 could be entitled "My love life" and be written on pink paper, followed by chapter 2, entitled "Work," written on green paper, and so on. Once you've finished, laminate your index paper and create cover pages for each section; decorate and laminate those as well.

Personalize your binder cover; if you selected the 3-ring binder with the clear cover, now is the time to get creative. Think about what you want your journal to symbolize at this point in your life. Choose a memorable quote, a beautiful drawing or a photo of you and your best friends. Whichever route you choose, create the artwork on a sheet of paper and insert it into the cover slot of your binder.
