Ideas for a Child's Name on a Tattoo

Tattoos are a permanent way to pay homage to something or someone you love. Personalize the tribute by incorporating the name of a child into a tribute tattoo. The use of color, placement, fonts and special effects and addition will add creativity and originality to your tattoo. Test your tattoos out in a variety of styles and placements before you make a final decision.
  1. Testing Tattoos

    • Test all your tattoos before you make a final decision on any of your ideas. Rub lotion or body oil on the area of the body you would like to test your tattoo. While the ink is still dry, place the paper, ink side down, on the oiled area. Draw your tattoo on a piece of paper with a pen. Lift the paper slowly off of the body and allow ink to dry.

    Script Style and Embellishments

    • Play around with the style of font to be used to write the child's name. Find one you like, then draw some embellishments on or around the name. Place one large embellishment underneath the name. Place one on top and one on the bottom. Use flowers, hearts or feminine swirls for a girl to add color to the name. Use stars, dots, circles and diamonds for boys to emphasize the name. Add dates of birth or flags of heritage for extra emphasis.

    Size and Placement

    • Play around with font and size for your tribute tattoo. Design your tattoo for a specific area of the body, then try it out in different areas of the body to make sure you like the final placement. Design a wrist tattoo with a child's name and then enlarge it and test it out on your ankle or bicep before making a final decision. Place a single name on your shoulder and then on your chest over your heart to see which place you like better.

    A Bigger Picture

    • Ask the child, if she is old enough, what types of toys or shapes she likes. Incorporate these items into the tribute tattoo to add color and round out the entire tattoo. Create a banner with the name on it, held by two favorite stuffed animals. Create a beach scene with the child's name floating in the water if the child likes the beach. Design a Ferris wheel with the name in the circles of the wheel if the child likes amusement parks.
