Ways to Make a Pentagram

Pentagrams are five-pointed stars that are featured in many religions and cultures. They can be found in the American flag, in Christian, Celtic and Pagan symbolism and on ancient Babylonian and Mesopotamian artifacts. A pentagram consists of five lines, meeting at five angles and is relatively easy to draw or make.
  1. Draw by Eye

    • If symmetry and precision are not vital to the finished product, easily draw a rough sketch of a pentagram. Draw a short horizontal line, then draw two lines diagonally that meet above the vertical line, bisect it and end below it. This creates an "A" shape, but the line across the "A" extends out either side. Draw a line from the bottom of the left leg of the "A" to the right end of the vertical line, and a line from the bottom right of the "A's" legs to the left end of the vertical line.

    Draw with a Compass

    • Draw a more symmetrical pentagram easily and quickly with a compass. Draw a circle the size you want your pentagram to be with the compass. Close the legs so that they are about 1/5 of the length of the circle you've drawn. Put the point of the compass at top of the circle and draw a mark that crosses the circle. Put the point on this mark, and draw another mark further round the circle. Continue till there are five points.

Check that the last and first marks made are the same distance apart as the rest. If not, adjust the leg's angle slightly and repeat the process. The marks show where the points of the pentangle will be, and use a ruler to join them.

    Draw With a Potractor

    • Using a protractor, draw a pentagram by using 36-degree angles. Draw a line of a set length, such as 5 centimeters. Line up the protractor so that it measures 36 degrees, and draw another 5-centimeter line from one end of the original line. Repeat this three more times, and if you've been careful with the angles, the lines should meet at original point.

    Precise Drawing With a Compass

    • It is a little harder to create an exact pentagram. You'll need a piece of paper much larger than your intended pentagram. Draw a line horizontally across the page with a ruler, using this as a center line. Create a circle with the compass. Keeping the compass the same size, put the point of the compass where the line and circle cross and draw a second circle. Draw a vertical line from where the two circles cross at the top to where they cross at the bottom. You should have two circles and two lines at this stage.

Set the compass so that the distance is exactly from the center (where the two straight lines meet) to the nearest bisection of the line by the circle. With the point of the compass on the center cross, draw a circle. You now have a small circle inside the two larger circles. This smaller circle will be the basis of the pentagram. Keeping the compass the same size, put the point of the compass on the right side of the circles where larger and smaller circles meet and are dissected by the horizontal line, and draw another circle. Draw a shorter vertical line where the two smaller circles cross each other.

Then set the compass to the distance between where the shorter vertical line crosses the horizontal line and where the small central circle is bisected by the longer vertical line. This is exactly 1/5 of the circles and can now be used to mark the five points for a pentagram.

    Making 3D Sculptures

    • Make pentagrams from strips of metal, cardboard, wood or even straight twigs quite easily. Each side needs to be the about the same length, and joined at a 36-degree angle.
