Pointillism Projects

Pointillism is an art technique which consists of creating images, shapes and landscapes by using small dots of paint. The 19th Century French painter, Georges Seurat, invented this technique, creating huge compositions with diminutive detached strokes, which were too small to be noticed in the context of the entire work. Art projects involving the pointillism technique can be simple and easy, pleasing children and adults of all kinds of artistic abilities.
  1. Black and White

    • You can explore pointillism in a minimalist way, using only a sheet of black paper and white paint. The challenge is to create your design or image without using colors, by making dots of different sizes thus creating diverse patterns and shadows. As an alternative to white paint, you can use a white pencil or crayon. Also, you can substitute the black sheet for a colored one.

    Mosaic

    • Rather than paint or pencils, use small beads or seeds to produce an original mosaic composition. You can use anything for background, from a recycled piece of carton or a wood board to a canvas. Alternatively, use old newspaper to make small balls to create your mosaic. You have the choice of painting these paper balls in different colors before gluing them on your canvas or piece of paper.

    Craft Clays

    • Craft clays are a versatile material to explore children creativity using pointillism techniques. First, flatten some clay, creating a sort of slab. Young children can simply use their small fingers to make the dots on the clay canvas. Older children can use a toothpick or even the back of a paint brush to compose their design. You can first read a story to the kids and later propose they create their favorite character or scene on the clay.

    Color Pen

    • Use color pens to create your design on a white sheet of paper. First use a pencil to draw your composition or design. The only thing you have to do afterward is fill in using the tip of your color pens. This and other pointillism techniques are also an effective way of channeling the attention of hyperactive people through a repetitive activity.
