Origami is the Japanese art of paper folding, and, for children new to this form of art, it will seem fascinating. Show the children a simple example of how a bird can be created via origami. Let the children select an object of their choice to try and make, but stress the need for a simple design. Once their attempts have been successful, children under the age of 10 should be given further simple designs to try and create, like a cup or a simple boat. Children over the age of 10 should be instructed to try to create more intricate designs, which will involve more folds.
Give an example of how silhouettes are created. Explain to the class that this is achieved by drawing the profile of a face or another object on black card. Scissors are then used to cut around the drawn image, and the cut image is then seen as a silhouette. Have children under the age of 12 draw a silhouette of a friend. There should be one silhouette drawn of each student in the class. Children aged 12 and over should be encouraged to attempt more elaborate designs such as the profiles of animals, such as a lion or elephant.
Encourage children to enjoy their art. Creating cartoons is one way of doing this. Ask children under the age of 10 to draw one of their favorite cartoon characters, or to create a cartoon character of their own. The cartoon should be drawn initially in pencil on white card, and then the original drawing should be drawn over with a black marker pen. Fill in the character with marker pens of different colors to finish it. Children over the age of 10 should be encouraged to create a cartoon strip, which should involve at least three characters of their own creation. This should be a story which takes up at least five panels.
Instruct the students to create school posters. Poster paint should be used for this project. The poster should depict life at the school with the help of symbols. Examples of relevant symbols include a book or a desk. The children should also be encouraged to use their own ideas to represent their school experience. Children between the ages of 8 to 11 should be asked to include three symbols in their poster. The 11 to 15 age group should include at least five symbols or have more elaborate artwork.
