How to Make Dinosaurs With the Keyboard

If you can type, you can draw a dinosaur using the keys on your keyboard. Drawings created by typing text is known as ASCII art. ASCII artists type lines of symbols and characters into a text editor and position them to form images. Common symbols used to create ASCII art include the period, the underscore, the front slash and the back slash. An easy way to learn how to draw a dinosaur this way is to look at existing ASCII dinosaur drawings and try to replicate them. Once you are comfortable replicating ASCII drawings, try creating your own.

Instructions

  1. Draw a Simple Dinosaur

      Open a text editor such as Notepad in Windows or SimpleText in MacOS.

      Change the font to Ariel and the font size to 14.

      Press the space bar 25 times and type two underscores. This is the top of the dinosaur's head.

      It should look like this: __

      Press the enter key to start another line.

      Press the space bar 24 times and type a forward slash. Press the space bar another two times and type an underscore. Press the space bar once more and type a closing bracket. This is the dinosaur's head.

      It should look like this: / _ )

      Press the enter key to start a new line.

      Press the space bar nine times. Type an underscore, a period, six hyphens, another period, another underscore and a forward slash. Press the space bar three more times and type a forward slash. This is the dinosaur's back and neck.

      It should look like this: _.------._/ /

      Press the enter key to start another line.

      Press the space bar three times. Type two underscores and one forward slash. Press the space bar another 17 times. Type a forward slash. This is the top of the dinosaur's tail and body. Press the enter key to start another line.

      Press the space bar two times. Type a forward slash and two underscores. Press the space bar once. Type a period. Press the space bar once more. Type a forward slash, an underscore, a back slash, five hyphens, another forward slash, another underscore and another back slash. This is the dinosaur's tail and legs.

      It should look like this: /__ . /_\-----/_\
