Feather Projects

There are so many directions yo can go when it comes to making crafts and projects with feathers. You can make anything from art to jewelry. Perhaps you would like to make something to display in your house or give as a gift to a friend. Decide beforehand how much time and money you are willing to spend on your project. Most of the supplies you will need can be found at your local arts and crafts store.
  1. Dreamcatcher

    • Dreamcatchers can add to your Native American motif.

To make this Native American craft, you will need suede lacing, beads, thread or yarn, metal ring and feathers. Wrap the suede lacing around the ring and knot both ends. Use some lacing to make a loop to hang the dreamcatcher from. Use the string or yarn to make a webbing design across the ring. During this step, you can thread a few beads for a design if you like. Use either the string or sued lacing to tie feathers as danglers from the bottom of the ring.

    Feather Planter

    • Multicolored craft feathers can be purchaseed at most craft stores.

You will need scissors, glue, construction paper, medium Styrofoam ball, small Styrofoam ball, wire pipe cleaner, kabob skewer, bag of craft feathers and two googly eyes. Cut the pipe cleaner in half to be used as the bird's neck. Bend the pipe cleaner into an "s" shape and stick one end into the medium Styrofoam ball. Glue one end of the skewer into the bottom of the ball. Begin sticking the craft feathers all around the ball to make the bird's body. Cut a piece of construction paper into a small triangle for the beak and glue onto the small Styrofoam ball. Glue the googly eyes on. Insert the top end of the pipe cleaner "neck" into the bottom of the small ball. Once dried, you have a feather bird planter for your flower pot.

    Feather Wreath

    • Use diferent colors for multiple wreaths to use for each season.

You will need a 10-inch straw wreath, floral pins and feathers. Leave the plastic on the wreath so the straw does not come apart or come through the feathers. One by one, place a feather diagonally onto the wreath and hold in place with a floral pin. Repeat this pattern until the entire wreath is covered in feathers and the straw underneath is no longer visible. You can glue a piece of string or leather lacing across the top to make a loop to hang the wreath by, if you wish. You can make several of these using different feather colors to accommodate all four seasons.

    Bird Feather Jewelry Box

    • Small to medium round jewelry boxes work best for this project.

You will need small round jewelry box, small Styrofoam ball, glue, craft paint, googly eyes, pipe cleaner and craft feathers. Paint the jewelry box and Styrofoam ball any color you like. When the paint dries, glue the Styrofoam ball onto the front of the lid. Glue googly eyes on. Cut the pipe cleaner small enough so that it looks like a beak when glued onto Styrofoam ball. Now glue your craft feathers all around the outside of the jewelry box.
