How to Protect Art During Termite Fumigation

Fumigation uses a pesticide gas that suffocates termites living in walls and inside wood beams. The gas penetrates wood and kills termites to stop further damage to the structure. It is sprayed into walls and around areas of termite damage or infestation by a licensed exterminator. Protecting artwork may be necessary depending on the piece and amount of infestation. Termite fumigation can be used in small areas or sprayed in the whole house using the tent method. To protect valuable artwork, remove it to a secure location outside of the home. Wood sculptures may need to be left out to be fumigated. Protect art by securely wrapping it with plastic. Wet paintings may need extra attention. When the house is aired out and passes inspection given after fumigation by the exterminator, it is safe to go back inside and replace and unwrap the artwork.

Instructions

  1. Wrapping the Artwork

    • 1

Lay out plastic sheeting on the floor. Cut out the plastic so that the piece can be wrapped once fully with extra to spare.

    • 2
This method is similar to packing for shipment.

Tightly wrap the piece. Once around is good, but twice is better. Treat the art as if it were food you were protecting. It should be airtight.

    • 3

Stack items in the middle of the room.

    • 4

Unpack after the process is complete, which should takes between 24 and 48 hours. When finished, the home should be safe and termite-free.

    • 5

      Save the plastic for reuse.
