How to Hand Trace Tattoo Stencils

Designing your own tattoo stencil is an easy way to ensure highly personal and unique artwork on your body. You will need to consider many factors, including the appropriate placement for your tattoo and the colors you would like to use. The detail of the artwork will dictate the size and appropriate placement of your tattoo. The colors are fully up to your discretion, though traditional tattoos are done in black and gray.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw the tattoo design on blank white paper, using your regular pencil. Take your time and correct any mistakes with an eraser. Be sure every line is drawn exactly as you want it before you go to Step 2.

    • 2

Trace over all the pencil lines with your black marker. Thin black markers are ideal since you can easily go over a certain line multiple times if a thicker line is necessary.

    • 3

Flip the paper over and copy the black lines onto the other side, again using your black marker. This necessary as it will be the mirror image of the tattoo design that will be stenciled onto your body, so that the tattoo will be the right way around. Copy these lines in a well-lit area so the lines show through as much as possible. A light table or light box is ideal, but not crucial.

    • 4

Lay a sheet of stencil paper over the reverse side of the tattoo design and tape the two pieces together. This will stave off any motion or slippage while you trace the image.

    • 5

Trace the image onto stencil paper using the tattoo stencil pencil. Take your time. If you make any mistakes, scrap the stencil paper and start over with a fresh piece.

    • 6

Allow a professional tattoo artist to observe the stencil and correct any mistakes or offer advice. Once your stencil is complete and deemed fit for application, the artist will shave the area to be tattooed and wipe your skin with a stencil solution or deodorant so the stencil ink will stick.

    • 7

Allow the artist to apply the stencil to your skin. Hold it firmly in place for 10 to 15 second before removing. Your design is now applied to your skin, and the artist can begin tattooing.
