Pen & Ink Techniques and Tools

The various styles of pen and ink artwork require several different tools, from pens that create definite, fine lines, to softer pens that can be used to create ink washes. For sketchy or solid lines, nib pens are a typical option, while brush pens can create varying sizes of lines or large swatches of color.
  1. Nib Pens

    • Nib pens are the most basic pen and ink tool for classic ink drawings. Nib pens can be found in fountain and dip varieties, though dip pens tend to be compatible with the widest selection of ink colors and types. The visual style of pen and ink art is created most easily with a finer tipped nib -- needle point or rounded are both used. Nibs for these pens range in stiffness, and should be selected based on the amount of pressure the artist naturally puts on their pen when drawing.

    Ink Types

    • Many different ink types are available for ink work in both color and black and white. Non-waterproof inks can be manipulated with water after they dry and are compatible with most pen types. Waterproof inks on the other hand, are permanent when dry and can be used under washes without changing, but are only compatible with dip pens and some brush pens.

    Brush Pens

    • Brush pens can be valuable tools when working in pen and ink, as these pens can create varied sized lines. Brush pens combine the flexibility of a paintbrush and the clean line of a marker, and come in a variety of sizes. These pens can be used to create lines of varied thicknesses, or lines of shifting thickness, more easily than other pen types. Brush pens can be spread with water and a watercolor paintbrush to create a wash, and are available in a variety of colors.

    Double Ended Pens

    • Double ended markers are available in many types and offer both thick and fine tip pens in one tool. Double ended markers come in a variety of types, including brush pens and permanent ink pens. Another benefit to double ended markers is the compact package -- especially for artists with a limited workspace.
