How to Mix and Match Bright Solid Colors

Mixing and matching bright colors, whether in interior decorating or when choosing an outfit, can make a bold impression. Choosing the correct colors to mix and match is all about observing the color wheel. Like all other colors, bold and bright colors have their own place on the color wheel. Experiment mixing and matching cool and warm colors that complement each other.

Instructions

    • 1

Examine the color wheel. Note that the colors in the color wheel are organized by different color families; whereas, the cool colors, such as blue, green and teal, occupy one part of the color wheel, and the another half of the color wheel is occupied by warm colors -- red, yellow, orange and pink.

    • 2

Use monochromatic color matching. In other words, mix and match different colors from the same color family. Choose the warm part of the color wheel for bright, solid colors. Note that any color from the same color family will usually go well together. Wear the same color in varying shades.

    • 3

Wear neutral colors if the outfit is too bold and bright. Use black, gray, white or beige to brighten cool colors and tone done bold colors. Also, wear contrasting color matches. Draw a straight line through the color wheel between the bold color you'd like to use to the other end; the color in the direct opposite end of the color is that color's complementary opposite.

Use stripes with caution -- although stripes can be effective when used well, they can also cause an unflattering color clash. Therefore, use stripes sparingly; for interior decorating, use stripes on one wall with colors that the color scheme of the room. For fashion, use stripes on only one garment of clothing.

Accessorize your look. Compliment your boldly colored wardrobe with complementary colored accessories, such as handbags, shoes and jewelry. Experiment with wearing different, multi-colored bracelets and necklaces at once. For interior decorating, find furniture or even appliances that complement the color scheme. Also, use accessories to tone down your bold wardrobe by using neutral colors, such as a beige or black handbag.
