Sequential Photography Ideas

Sequential photography and time-sequence photo essays can be created in several ways. This type of photography will chronicle some type of event, and often it will tell a story with a visual essay. The best sequence photography involves subjects that are obviously passing through time, such as a flower blooming or a child growing up. There is no time limit to composing shots that will comprise sequential photography -- they can span a few hours, a few days or up to several years.
  1. News

    • Sequential photography can be used in news reporting. You may work on a natural disaster, taking photos of the weather event as it hits; the aftermath of destroyed homes; and ultimately, the rebuilding of a community. If you know that a disaster, such as a flood or a hurricane, will hit, you could take photos of the town or city beforehand. You could also work on a smaller-scale event, like a prominent couple's wedding. Document the process well before the actual event, such as during the months of wedding planning. The photo essay should include simple photos like the prospective bride and groom looking through caterers' books, tender moments like the placement of rings during the wedding, humorous moments like the bride and groom smashing cake on each other's faces during the reception, and it should display some of their post-nuptial life.

    Day in the Life

    • Shoot a "day in the life" photography sequence. Choose to follow anybody, including your own stops in everyday life. Start first thing in the morning and capture your entire day. Alternatively, follow someone in a certain profession and chronicle their day, both in their personal life and their career. This idea requires some preparation; while it's OK to photograph people in public settings without their permission, many of the places you may travel in the course of a day -- such as a work place or others' homes -- are considered private locations in courts of law. Avoid photographing private residents in secluded locations, and always ask permission if you plan to do so anyway.

    Nature

    • Nature provides many opportunities for photography sequences. Set up a camera to capture a flower as it's blooming. You can shoot the same landscape throughout the year and show the changes in the atmosphere as the seasons pass. You can also photograph how the moon changes throughout a specific month. Depending on your photography skills and equipment quality, these shots -- for many people -- can double as art, and you may find that people will pay top dollar for high-quality nature photography.

    Locations

    • Shoot the same location over a period. For example, pick a certain street in a city and shoot it at different times of the day and week. Alternatively, shoot several of the same types of areas while traveling to different locations. For example, take photos of the busiest street in every city you travel to. You could also shoot poverty-stricken areas in each state you travel to and create a photo essay. Venturing outside your geographical territory -- and in some cases, boundaries of comfort -- can help educate others in your hometown about other locations or people who are less fortunate or otherwise have different lifestyles.
