How to Make a Stencil for a Screen Printing Machine

Creating your own stencil to use in a screen printing machine can be done in a number of different ways. The most straight forward method of creating a stencil is the screen filler or "negative" method. This creates a stencil directly on the screen, where the areas of the screen that you do not want to print are filled in or covered. Simple shapes and silhouettes are very effective when screen printed.

Instructions

    • 1

Print or draw a design that you want to print on to a piece of paper. Place that design on a work surface. Place the silk screen printing frame on top of the design. The mesh of the frame should be touching the work surface.

    • 2

Trace the design onto the screen with the pencil.

    • 3

Raise the screen so that it is still horizontal to the work surface, but the mesh is not touching the work surface. Place the newspaper under your work area. Mix the pot of screen filler until it looks smooth.

    • 4

Paint the areas of the design that you do not want to print with screen filler. Try to cover all these areas with an even layer of screen filler and make sure you don't miss any parts of the screen.

    • 5

Turn the screen over and smooth out any areas where the screen filler may have gathered on the bottom of the screen. Fill in any gaps or missed patches of the screen.

    • 6

Turn the screen back over so that the pencil draw-on side is facing up. Leave the screen to dry in a horizontal position overnight. This will stop the screen filler from dripping down the screen.

    • 7

Lift the dried screen up to a light to check that there are no holes or gaps on the parts of the screen that should be filled. Fill in any holes or gaps that are discovered and leave the screen to dry overnight. This completes your stencil.

    • 8

Insert your stenciled printing frame into the printing machine and begin printing.
