How to Make Glazed Pottery Fade

Make a piece of glazed pottery look distressed and faded, as if it has seen many more years than it has. Use a sanding process with the appropriate grit variances to dull the shine of the glaze and make it look naturally aged. Since the color of glaze has been fired into the pottery, you will need to speed up the color fading process naturally over time. By exposing the pottery in concentrated doses to the things that make it fade, it will fade much more quickly.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Rub random spots on the glazed surface of the pottery with a coarse, 40 grit and 60 grit, sanding block to remove the shine from these areas.

    • 2

Sand over the areas you sanded with the coarse grit sanding block with a fine, 150 grit and 180 grit, sanding block to remove the deep scratches that the coarse grit sanding block left behind.

    • 3

Place the pottery out in direct sunlight for one month and then turn it around so that the color fades on all sides. Leaving the pottery in a sunny window or greenhouse will work, but the sun, along with the weather elements will make the color will fade more quickly.
