Turn off any lamps in the room.
Look at the shiny ornament and determine if it contains any bright reflections. If you notice a reflection, close the shades on your windows and look again. If the object still contains reflections, open the windows. Natural light typically creates a more aesthetically pleasing photograph.
Surround the ornament with soft, diffused light. Place one photography light several feet away from the object, slightly to the right or left of the object. Point the light at a white ceiling or wall to bounce the light off the wall. Alternatively, place a soft box or white sheet over the light and point it at the shiny ornament.
Remove the lens cap of your camera and point it at the shiny ornament. Turn off the flash using the menu or the flash knob.
Hold a light meter in front of the shiny ornament, so that the knob of the light meter faces the camera. Read the suggested settings on the light meter. Adjust your camera to these settings.
Look through the viewfinder and focus the image. Press the shutter release to take the picture. If desired, photograph the ornament from several slightly different angles by moving the camera a few inches in any direction or adjusting the angle.
