How to Alter a Primer Cap

The nozzle on a spray primer can affect the way the primer goes onto the surface. You can replace the can's spray nozzle, called a cap, to change the application of the primer. Spray primer has either a male or a female cap. Most commercially available caps are male caps, but many brands of primer and spray paint are equipped to accept only female caps, making the alternate caps useless. You can, however, alter the caps from male to female so you can use them.

Instructions

    • 1

Chop the stem off the underside of a male cap using a knife. Carefully trim away any remainder of the stem.

    • 2

Place the cap bottom-side-up in the vice.

    • 3

Drill into the hole until the bottom of the hole is approximately even with the bottom of the dot on the front of the cap. Take care not to drill too far; failing to go deep enough is preferable to going too deep, which will ruin the cap.

    • 4

Remove the plastic you have drilled out, and slip the cap onto the stem on a paint can. Test the cap on scrap wood or cardboard.
