How to Make Paper Masks With Fourth Graders

Masks don't only hide a person's face. They also express different feelings and aspects of a certain culture. Children can learn about different cultures and the expressions and characteristics they display by making their own masks. One appropriate theme for fourth grade students is the Mardi Gras mask, often worn at the Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans to mark the beginning of the Christian Lenten season.

Instructions

    • 1

Tear off one piece of construction paper from the pad for each student. Fold each sheet in half vertically.

    • 2

Unfold each sheet and draw the shape of a face so the fold in the paper bisects the face shape. Make both sides of the face identical in size and shape, creating symmetry.

    • 3

Cut out the face shape from the paper.

    • 4

Draw the shapes of two eyes on the face cutout, with one eye shape on each side of the middle fold. Cut out the eye shapes from the face cutout to create eyeholes.

    • 5

Decorate the mask by painting it or by gluing sequins, glue and feathers to the front of the mask. Mardi Gras masks typically resemble human faces with artistic features, so students should also outline the eyes of the mask using black marker or paint to look like eyeliner and the mouths using red marker or paint to look like lipstick.

    • 6

Punch one hole in each side of the mask above and behind where the person's ears would be.

    • 7

Cut about 9 inches of fishing line or string and loosely tie each end of the cut string through one of the holes so the string can loop behind the wearer's head and rest on the ears. Have the child try on the mask. Adjust the string until it's comfortable, and then tie it snugly.
