Unfinished Wood Projects for Decoupage

Decoupage is an art technique where paper cutouts are pasted to a surface. Cutouts can come from magazines, specialty papers, newsprint or photos. Paste is applied to the cutout and the surface as well as the entire top of the piece to make a smooth seal. Unfinished wood projects are a good choice for their sturdiness and the variety of designs available. Most art stores carry decoupage supplies and a selection of unfinished wood projects.
  1. Picture Frames

    • Unfinished wood frames make a special gift when covered with themed decoupage. You can cover a frame with elegant wedding bells along with silver and patterned paper to make a wedding gift. A team sports photo goes well with a picture frame covered in images of sports equipment and team emblems. A general theme can match the overall décor of a room. When choosing pictures to place on the frame, arrange them without the paste to see how the finished piece will look.

    Jewelry Boxes

    • Other unfinished wood projects include small boxes, which come in a variety of sizes. Try using images from nature, dancing, seasons, a favorite activity or music. Decoupage can be applied to the entire surface or just a small portion. You can paint the box a background color, then decoupage a picture into the top to show off a favorite picture without using many supplies. Another option is origami papers, which come in a variety of colors and patterns to suit any décor.

    Wood Sign

    • Unfinished wooden signs come in different shapes and sizes to suit a multitude of applications. Create a name plaque by covering the background with a light color. Then type out a name using a computer paint program, stylizing the font and printing. Carefully cut out the letters to make a template, then use it to cut out a darker color for the foreground of the decoupage. Dark over light makes for strong contrast.

    Magnets

    • Make a magnet using a small unfinished wood cutout to cover in your favorite decoupage colors. After the piece is sealed and dry, glue a small magnet to the backside of the wood. Wood cutouts and small craft magnets can be found in most craft stores. If you have children, let them decorate a magnet to hang up their art.
