Open the file you wish to work with on your computer. You can use any type of image you have created or taken. You can work with photo programs or document programs, whatever you want to transfer onto the canvas.
Run a test sheet through your printer. This will help you determine exactly how your printer works with the paper. Put an “X” on one corner and then print the image. See where the X comes out on the paper as compared to how it was placed in the paper tray. Use this to make sure you insert the iron-on paper correctly.
Place the iron-on paper in the paper tray so the printer will print to the proper side, the paper package will clearly state onto which side of the paper the image needs to be printed. Some iron-on sets come with a cover while others require you print on the sticky side of the paper.
Print the image on the iron-on paper. Let the ink fully dry before you work with it further.
Lay your canvas flat on an ironing board or other flat surface. If you choose to use a table, place a towel underneath the canvas to absorb the heat.
Plug in and heat your iron. Typically, the instructions call for a very hot iron, but verify the setting with the specific instructions for your iron-on paper.
Place the iron-on paper on the canvas exactly where you want the image to be. You can work with centering it before applying any heat.
Use the heated iron to run over the top of the iron-on paper. Press firmly and move quickly, so as not to burn the paper or the material. Make sure to apply heat to the entire image.
Peel the corner of the paper slowly and only a little bit to make sure the image is not sticking, but has adhered completely to the canvas. If it has, slowly pull the paper completely off of the canvas. If it is sticking to the paper, press the corner back down and apply heat for a little while longer before peeling off the paper.
