Kanto Region

* Pewter City: Brock (Rock-type)

* Cerulean City: Misty (Water-type)

* Vermilion City: Lt. Surge (Electric-type)

* Celadon City: Erika (Grass-type)

* Fuchsia City: Koga (Poison-type)

* Saffron City: Sabrina (Psychic-type)

* Cinnabar Island: Blaine (Fire-type)

* Viridian City: Giovanni (Ground-type)

Note: The Viridian City gym leader, Giovanni, is the leader of Team Rocket and is not encountered until the latter half of the game.

Elite Four: The final challenge before the Champion of Kanto.

* Bruno (Fighting-type)

Champion: The final challenge in Kanto is against the Champion, Blue (formerly known as Gary Oak). He specializes in Water-type Pokémon.
