How to Learn the Charleston Dance Online

The Charleston is a popular dance that originated in the 1920s during the "flapper" period. There are variations and extra steps, but the basic dance is easy to learn.

  1. Basic Steps

      Kicks: Start with your feet together. Step back with your right foot. Kick your left foot back behind you.
      Step back to starting position with your left foot, then kick your right foot forward.
      Step back to starting position with your right foot, and repeat these steps.

      Swings: Think of the arm movement as if you're walking -- when your right foot goes back, your left arm swings forward, and vice versa.

      Put the arm and leg movements together. The dance should be exaggerated, like you're flailing around.
